  1. Archimedes Elite
  2. ================
  3. This copy of Elite for the Archimedes was released on Ian Bell's
  4. website.  It is free, and has the password protection present in the
  5. commercial version removed.

  8. a HTML version of the manual complete with pictures, can be found on

  12. The original version was not StrongARM compatible and had problems running
  13. on other machines; in this version I have added a new loader which 
  14. automatically detects what type of computer it's running on and makes any
  15. necessary adjustments.  This means that this version of Elite should run on
  16. any Acorn RiscOS computer from a RiscOS 2 A310 to a StrongARM Risc PC!

  18. Those adjustments are:
  19.   - On a StrongARM machine (well, a RiscOS 3.7 or above machine) it'll turn
  20.     the cache off, run the main program, and then switch the cache back on.
  21.     It does mean it take about ten seconds to load, but that's a small price
  22.     to pay for getting rid of "undefined instruction" errors.
  23.   - On any Risc PC (including StrongARM) it'll load the rjw_Sync module to
  24.     make sure the game doesn't play too fast.  !rjw_Synch is stored
  25.     unmodified in !élite.Mods.
  26.   - If you're using a pre-RiscPC machine it will ask if you have a high-
  27.     resolution monitor and if you answer "Y" it'll load the same rjw_Sync 
  28.     module.
  29.   - Note that you can still double-click on commander files to load !élite
  30.     with that commander installed; the loader program passes the information
  31.     on to the main program.
